Emotional Spring Cleaning: Four Tips to Clear the Mind and Create Space for Beautiful Beginnings

    March 7, 2019

The process of emotional cleaning seems daunting. As with so many things in life it can appear to be unnecessary but as I have found these are the experiences and lessons that we need the most.

Looking back, I can remember a young woman who would run away from anything that asked her to feel. Feelings were painful and feeling them was difficult so I did my best to mask the pain they created. But over time, I realized that feeling those feelings was the only way to bring life back into your days.

Your feelings can go from being the scariest thing you’ve ever felt to the most powerful, epic feeling of love and support. And that is why it’s necessary to stand in your feelings and never run away.

So why do I bring this up?

Look outside. There’s a crisp newness in the air. The sun is shining, the birds are chirping and beautiful baby flowers are beginning to bloom and grow.  It’s the season for beautiful beginnings and growth and it must happen within ourselves as well.

It’s time to let go of the past and focus on what’s to come.

If you’re ready to step forward, and shed the heavy burden of the winter, then keep reading as I have some terrific tips for you on how to emotionally prepare for spring.

    Clear the Clutter

Do you know that feeling you get when you walk into your house and it’s just been cleaned? Well for me, it’s amazing. It’s like a free pass to sit down anywhere in my house and just be still with my thoughts. Without having to worry about that laundry list of things that need to be cleaned or scrubbed. Cleaning our house can be emotionally freeing and a great tool to quiet the mind.

While you’re at it get into those overstuffed drawers in your home and start throwing away all the unnecessary papers, trinkets and pieces that are holding you back. Don’t cling onto the past, as it will only hold you back. Clean and collect and then donate or sell any item that you have not used over the past three months.

If it doesn’t have a home, find one, or let it go.

    Let Go of Resentment

Resentment is killing you not the person who hurt you. It’s hard to believe at times but it’s oh so true. Those unsaid feelings that you’re harboring are building up inside and creating a comfortable place to reside. But while it’s comfortable for those feelings it’s painful as fuck for you. You’ve got to let that shit go. Ask yourself, “Why are you holding onto this?” Is it possible that expectations you placed on another person were unreasonable? Is it possible that the other person responded to you from a source of their own pain?

Make a list of people who have hurt you and then go back to that list and ask yourself is it worth it to hold on to this pain that you’re carrying? If you want to move on then it’s time to let go and move forward.

The past is the past and you’re living in the present.

    Re-Commit to Two Healthy Intentions

Did you set intentions for the New Year? I bet you did. But if you’re like the rest of us you’ve probably forgotten all about them. Go back to that journal and see if those intentions align with how you feel today.

Recommit to two intentions that will support a healthy lifestyle. Whether it be yoga or mindfulness, journaling or meditation, healthy eating, drinking more water, exercise, or even extra time spent outdoors with your children. Take extra time to support yourself during this season of growth and change.

    Practice Compassion

Stop holding yourself to the impossible standard of perfection and begin to love the beautiful being that you are. Life is messy and at times we can be as well but that does not make us wrong or bad, this in itself makes us human. Limit the impossible expectations that we place on yourself and begin to love yourself, as you are.

When doing this, be sure to practice it for others as well. The standard of perfection is not only impossible for us, but it’s also impossible for those that we love and care for.

Remind yourself that you are a human being and you are not meant to be perfect, you are meant to be yourself.

Free your mind and make room for joy.

    Happy blooming,

    Melissa
