Three Reasons You Need to Tell Your Story

    July 6, 2017

“Living with integrity means: Not settling for less than what you know you deserve in your relationships. Asking for what you want and need from others. Speaking your truth, even though it might create conflict or tension. Behaving in ways that are in harmony with your personal values. Making choices based on what you believe, and not what others believe.”
    ~ Barbara De Angelis

There will come a day where you will find your voice. You will find it easier to say how you feel rather than hold it all in. You will not fear judgment or harbor resentment.  You will appear to be free. But will you truly be?

Honoring our inner wisdom, or the voice within, is the most powerful tool to living an authentic life. Speaking our truth allows us communicate with the world effectively in a kind hearted manner. We speak from an honest place of sincerity that allows us to be true. We don’t hold back our feelings because we fear that we may be rejected, or judged or even have our loved ones walk away. We don’t fear the discomfort of an awkward conversation because we are fully aware that internalizing our emotions could lead to years, possibly decades of inner turmoil. Instead, by being true we honor those we love.

When we don’t speak our truth we carry resentment, anger and pain. All of which continues into every new argument, new relationship and possibly new love. We bottle up. So much so that we are afraid to unveil any layer of ourselves for fear that every hidden layer will be revealed. Not speaking our truth is a slow path to emotional angst. Not speaking our truth severs all ties we have in our relationships as we continuously work to ensure that all of our layers remain unseen.

Speaking our truth allows us to be vulnerable. We are no longer filled with fear about what may happen if someone discovers our hidden insecurities. We push beyond the “normal comfort zone” and communicate our deepest darkest secrets because we have already seen the dark side of holding back. We seek to fill our hearts with love so we wholeheartedly speak our truth to the world.

However there is an undefined line between speaking our truth and honoring our truth.

When we honor our truth our actions align with our words. Not only do we say what we want but we follow through on our thoughts. When we say we are seeking relationships with which we feel supported, we are not settling for relationships where we are not. When we say we appreciate the kindness of strangers but we are not kind to others, then we are not honoring our truth. Our actions must mirror our words or they mean nothing. We must speak our truth and let our words guide us in the right direction.

So which direction will your truth bring you?

    Communication

Communication is key to establishing healthy lifelong relationships. Approach your loved ones from a place of respect and honor their feelings. Listen to understand not to be heard. Make it a point to shut down the internal voice inside your head that is preparing a response and listen wholeheartedly. Then change your mindset from needing to be right to looking for a solution that is mutually beneficial.

    Get Beyond your Comfort Zone

In order to ensure that your words match your actions you must be willing to go beyond your comfort zone. Take a moment to reflect on where you are today. Does your job reflect your desires? Are you happy in your relationships? Are you fulfilled?  Get wholeheartedly honest with yourself about your needs and ensuring that the path you are on honors your truth.

    Reclaim your Voice

It is only when our actions match our words that our voice is reclaimed. Establish clear-cut boundaries with friends and family members that will encourage you to not revert to previous maladaptive behaviors. Nurture your inner wisdom and speak softly to your inner critic. Become one with your intuition and allow it to guide you in the appropriate direction.

What we will find when we honor our truth…

While honoring our truth can be really hard it can also be god damn amazing! When we are honest about our needs and live a life that is aligned with them we open the door to endless amounts of joy and expansion. We let go of our need to be validated by others and we fill that need up with our own wants and desires. We release ties with every aspect in life that holds us back and wholeheartedly become invested in the life we want; a life that is filled with deeper connections, an enhanced sense of self and complete authenticity. A life that we all desire, one that is guided by light and filled with love.
